Description
This second-edition paperback is a step-by-step Vietnamese course for English-speaking beginners. It is designed for self-study or classroom use and has a Southern Vietnamese focus, especially in pronunciation and everyday conversation.
Lessons introduce the alphabet and tones, then build through vocabulary, sentence patterns, grammar notes, dialogues, translation tasks, quizzes, and review work. Topics include greetings, numbers, food, time, transport, clothing, health, family, occupations, feelings, and weather. The progression is practical, and the exercises give you more to do than simply read explanations.
The main drawback is that the book-only edition does not include audio. Paiboon's three-CD recording set was sold separately, so pronunciation and listening practice are limited unless you find that companion or work with a Vietnamese speaker. Some learners also find the vocabulary lists dense, and the Southern orientation is not consistent across every word and spelling.
