Colloquial Vietnamese
A step-by-step self-study course with practical dialogues, regional pronunciation notes, exercises, answer keys, and free native-speaker audio.
This is a focused pronunciation workbook from the Defense Language Institute's Hanoi Vietnamese course. It is for beginners who want systematic Northern sound training, or learners who want to recognize the Hanoi accent. It can be used alone, though it was built for intensive classroom practice.
Across 62 pages, the book covers vowels, initial and final consonants, diphthongs, consonant clusters, and tones. Short explanations lead into repetition and contrast drills. Five matching audio tracks add about 170 minutes of listening and imitation practice. Live Lingua also provides a recorder so you can play back your own voice.
The narrow focus is both its strength and limit. You get concentrated work on sounds and spelling patterns, but no everyday dialogues, broad vocabulary, or feedback on accuracy. Published in 1972, it states that its language reflects usage before 1975, so use it as a pronunciation supplement rather than a complete current course.
