Colloquial Vietnamese
A step-by-step self-study course with practical dialogues, regional pronunciation notes, exercises, answer keys, and free native-speaker audio.
This is a free 1969 FSI textbook for beginners studying Vietnamese as spoken in South Vietnam. It suits you if you want a structured, repetition-heavy course and are comfortable with an older classroom style.
Across 12 lessons, you memorize bilingual dialogues, read short grammar and usage notes, then work through substitution, transformation, response, expansion, and combination drills. Each lesson ends with oral practice activities. The book also includes emergency phrases and a Vietnamese-English glossary.
The progression is clear, and the repeated sentence manipulation gives you substantial practice with basic vocabulary and grammar patterns. However, Live Lingua provides only the 247-page PDF for this title. The accompanying tapes described in the book are not available there, so speaking and pronunciation work lacks a native model or feedback. Some situations and vocabulary also reflect its 1969 South Vietnam setting.
