Colloquial Vietnamese
A step-by-step self-study course with practical dialogues, regional pronunciation notes, exercises, answer keys, and free native-speaker audio.
This is the first half of a 1967 FSI course for serious beginners who want Southern Vietnamese. You get a free 390-page PDF covering a pronunciation guide and units 1 through 10, plus about 15 hours of matching audio. It suits learners who prefer a clear sequence and lots of repetition over short, game-like lessons.
The course starts by training you to hear, compare, and imitate Southern sounds and tones. Later units use dialogues, grammar notes, vocabulary, substitution drills, response drills, and exercises. The audio is central rather than optional, so you spend much of your study listening and repeating aloud.
Its strongest feature is the depth of pronunciation and pattern practice at no cost. The tradeoff is age and style. Examples include 1960s diplomatic and Saigon settings, and some wording is no longer natural for everyday use. The drills can also feel dry, and Volume 1 does not complete the full course.
