Colloquial Vietnamese
A step-by-step self-study course with practical dialogues, regional pronunciation notes, exercises, answer keys, and free native-speaker audio.
This is a self-study workbook for beginners who want to understand how written Vietnamese maps to sound. Its main focus is the alphabet, consonants, vowels, spelling and the tone system, so it suits learners building a reading and pronunciation foundation rather than looking for a travel phrasebook.
Across 10 chapters, you work through short lessons and extensive practice such as listening drills, dialogues, sentence building, fill-in-the-blank tasks, readings and multiple-choice questions. Native-speaker recordings let you compare sounds and tones with real audio, while printable flashcards reinforce the alphabet and basic vocabulary.
The book also includes cultural notes, a Vietnamese-English glossary and an index of grammatical terms. It gives you plenty to do independently, but the material stays at beginner level and has less everyday phrase coverage than a conversation-focused course. As a self-study book, it cannot provide personal correction on your pronunciation.
