Elementary Vietnamese is a 320-page beginner coursebook for adults who want a serious, classroom-style path into the language. Its 14 lessons move from everyday dialogues into vocabulary, grammar, usage, drills, exercises, cultural notes, narratives, and authentic material. No previous knowledge of Vietnamese is required.

Audio is a major part of the package. Tuttle provides about eight hours of recordings by native speakers for every lesson, along with detailed pronunciation drills and printable flashcards. This gives you more support for tones, listening, and vocabulary review than a text-only book. Vietnamese-English and English-Vietnamese glossaries are also included.

The trade-off is the academic style. The book was developed for classroom use at Harvard, and its grammar explanations and vocabulary load are dense for casual self-study. It focuses on Hanoi-based Northern Vietnamese, so learners aiming for Southern pronunciation will need additional material or help from a teacher.
