Colloquial Vietnamese
Beginner Vietnamese textbook with structured lessons, grammar, exercises, and free native-speaker audio for the dialogues and reading passages.
Elementary Vietnamese is a beginner textbook for adults who want a serious, step by step introduction to the language. It was developed for classroom use at Harvard and the current Tuttle edition is a 320 page paperback with 14 lessons. If you like learning from a book with a clear path instead of jumping between random apps and videos, this is the kind of resource that makes sense.
Each lesson moves through dialogues, vocabulary, grammar notes, usage notes, drills, and cultural material. Tuttle also provides free companion audio and printable flash cards on its download page, which makes the book more useful for listening and pronunciation practice than a textbook alone. The official book page says the revised fourth edition includes about 8 hours of native speaker audio and updated examples.
What it does well is structure. You get a real course, not just phrase lists, so it can help you build reading, grammar, and pronunciation together. The downside is that it is fairly academic and can feel dense if you want a very gentle start. Some learners also find the vocabulary load heavy and the book works better for guided study or disciplined self-study than for casual practice. It teaches a lot, but you will still need outside speaking practice if conversation is your main goal.
