Basic Vietnamese is a free online textbook from Michigan State University Libraries for complete beginners and low-novice learners. It is written by Tung Hoang and works well if you want a structured starting point instead of scattered videos or phrase lists. You can read it online or download it in formats like PDF and EPUB on the book page.

The book starts with pronunciation, including the alphabet, tones, tone marks, and key sounds, then moves into 15 everyday topics. Each chapter follows a clear pattern with conversations, vocabulary, grammar, culture notes, and practice activities, so it feels more like a real course book than a reference guide. Audio from native speakers is built into the lessons, which is especially useful early on when you are trying to hear tones and basic sentence rhythm.

What it does well is structure and clarity. The lessons are organized, the explanations are beginner friendly, and the mix of audio and exercises makes it more useful than a plain text PDF. It also includes some Northern and Southern forms in places, especially in pronunciation and vocabulary.

The main limitation is that it is still a textbook, not a full speaking program. You can build a strong foundation in pronunciation, grammar, and core vocabulary, but you will still need outside conversation practice if your goal is real-time speaking.
