Colloquial Vietnamese
Beginner Vietnamese textbook with structured lessons, grammar, exercises, and free native-speaker audio for the dialogues and reading passages.
Vietnamese Tone: A New Analysis is an academic linguistics book by Andrea Hoa Pham. It is aimed at advanced learners, teachers, and linguistics students who want to understand how Vietnamese tones are organized, not at beginners looking for a practical textbook.
The book is structured like a research monograph, with chapters on phonological issues, tonal inventory, acoustics, and the phonetics and phonology of tone. One useful part is that it tackles the well known six-tone versus eight-tone analysis and explains why different descriptions of Vietnamese tone exist. Routledge still lists it as a current title, so it is not an abandoned reference.
For self-study learners, the value is in the explanations, not in practice. You do not get audio, drills, dialogues, or graded lessons, and the discussion is mostly centered on Northern Vietnamese, especially the Hanoi standard. If you want a serious book on how Vietnamese tone works, this is a solid reference. If you want day to day pronunciation training, you will need another resource alongside it.
