Website for FSI Vietnamese Basic Course Volume

This is a free old-school Vietnamese course book hosted by Live Lingua. It repackages the Foreign Service Institute materials into two volumes with a student text and matching audio. If you want a structured beginner course and do not mind a dated teaching style, it is a solid option, especially if you want Southern Vietnamese pronunciation.

Volume 1 starts with a long pronunciation guide and Lessons 1 to 10. Volume 2 continues with Lessons 11 to 15. You work through dialogs, pattern drills, imitation, and grammar notes rather than quick tips or casual phrasebook content. The audio load is big, so you get a lot of listening and repeat-after-the-speaker practice. You can use the materials on Live Lingua Volume 1 and Volume 2.

What it does well is pronunciation and habit-building. The course was designed for intensive training, so it gives you more repetition than many modern beginner books. The downside is that it feels dense, formal, and dated. It is not the best pick if you want natural modern conversations, colorful explanations, or a lighter introduction to reading and everyday Vietnamese.
