Southern Vietnamese for Beginners

Southern Vietnamese for Beginners is a beginner textbook for learners who want spoken Southern Vietnamese, especially the kind used in Ho Chi Minh City. It is aimed at complete beginners and works well for self-study if you want a structured starting point instead of scattered lessons.

The book teaches through 20 connected story chapters about two young people in a language school. The story is presented in a comic-style format, which makes the dialogues less dry than a typical textbook. Each chapter adds new words and sentence patterns, then follows up with a glossary and short language notes that explain how the Vietnamese works in plain English.

A big plus is that it is built around Southern speech rather than standard textbook Vietnamese. Official descriptions also mention companion audio, a paused audio track for repeat-after-listening practice, and video pronunciation tutorials, which makes it more useful for listening and pronunciation than a print-only book. The tradeoff is that it is still a book-based course, so you will not get real conversation practice or feedback on your speaking. If you want Northern Vietnamese, this is also the wrong dialect to start with.
