Colloquial Vietnamese
Beginner Vietnamese textbook with structured lessons, grammar, exercises, and free native-speaker audio for the dialogues and reading passages.
This is a grade 3 Vietnamese practice book for children, especially heritage learners growing up outside Vietnam. In the preface, the authors say it was written for students in overseas Vietnamese families who use Vietnamese as a second language, so it fits weekend schools, home classes, and parent-led study better than adult self-study.
It starts with a pronunciation and spelling guide, then moves through 18 lessons that mix word practice with reading passages. Topics include family, holidays, folk tales, history, and general knowledge. Exercises ask kids to read, copy, fill blanks, answer questions, and make sentences. The back of the book includes quizzes and tests, which is useful for class use.
Its main strength is structure. You get a clear sequence and lots of repetition, which helps kids build reading and written Vietnamese step by step. The downside is that it is very traditional. There is no audio, little speaking practice, and some readings work best with a parent or teacher explaining vocabulary and context.
