Tuttle Compact Vietnamese Dictionary is a 642-page, two-way reference for English-speaking learners who want to look up Vietnamese words, and for Vietnamese speakers checking English. It works best as a study companion or desk reference, not as a step-by-step course.
The book contains more than 25,000 entries split between Vietnamese-English and English-Vietnamese sections. Entries include parts of speech, idioms, and sample sentences, so you get more context than a bare translation. Blue headwords make scanning easier, while the front matter adds a Vietnamese pronunciation guide and notes on grammar.
Its main limits are the format and age. There is no recorded audio, speaking practice, or structured lesson sequence, so the pronunciation guide cannot replace hearing native speech. The current revised edition was published in 2016, limiting its coverage of vocabulary coined since then. At 642 pages, it is compact in page size rather than truly pocket-sized.
