Instant Vietnamese is a small paperback phrasebook for complete beginners who want quick, practical Vietnamese rather than a full course. It is aimed mostly at travelers and short-term visitors, or anyone who wants a lightweight book they can carry around easily. If you want a book for grammar study or long-term progression, this is probably too limited on its own.

The main idea is simple: learn 100 high-use words and patterns, then mix them to make many everyday sentences. Tuttle says the book includes a pronunciation guide for both Northern and Southern Vietnamese, a small Vietnamese dictionary, and downloadable MP3 audio on the publisher's audio page. The examples focus on practical situations like meeting people, shopping, asking directions, and ordering food.

What it does well is keep things short and usable. The pocket size and narrow focus make it easy to dip into before a trip, and the audio is helpful if you want to hear tones and sample phrases. The downside is that it is still a phrasebook, so you will not get deep explanations, much reading practice, or enough structure for serious study. One Goodreads review also notes typos and some simplified pronunciation shortcuts, so it is best used as a handy starter, not your only resource.
