Description
Duolingo’s Vietnamese course is a gamified mobile course for beginners who want a low-pressure way to build a daily study habit. It teaches Northern Vietnamese from English through a path of short lessons. The core course is free, while Super removes ads and practice limits.
You work through translation, word-order, matching, typing, and listening tasks. The app repeats vocabulary and sentence patterns, then uses streaks, XP, and leaderboards to keep you returning. This works well for quick reading and listening practice when you only have a few minutes.
The course is less useful as a complete introduction to Vietnamese. Grammar explanations are sparse, tones and pronunciation are not taught systematically, and there is no human conversation practice. Learners also report formal or unnatural sentences and uneven vocabulary progression. It is better as a practice supplement than your only resource, especially if you need Southern Vietnamese.
