Basic Vietnamese for English Speakers: Audio

This is a free Anki deck for English speakers who want a basic Northern Vietnamese vocabulary deck with audio support. It works best if you already like studying with flash cards and want something simple to review every day. Beginners can use it, but it is not a full course, so you will still need other resources for grammar and conversation.

The deck includes 1,096 cards and focuses on words and short phrases rather than long explanations. The creator says the cards are color coded by tone, include a tone chart, and are tagged for custom study. Most cards have audio, which makes it more useful for getting used to pronunciation and tones than a text only deck. You can find the deck on AnkiWeb and the creator's original post on Reddit.

What it does well is give you a large starter bank of everyday vocabulary in a format that fits spaced repetition. What it does not do well is teach Vietnamese in a step by step way. There are no built in lessons, grammar walkthroughs, or speaking practice, so it is better as a review tool than as your only resource. The deck was still being checked by the creator in June 2024, when they replied on the Anki forum support page and said missing files had been fixed.
