Reading & Writing Vietnamese is a paperback workbook for self-study by Trí C. Trần (Tuttle). It is built for beginners who want a guided start with the Vietnamese sound system, tones, and the spelling rules behind what you hear.

You work through structured lessons on consonants, vowels, and tones, then reinforce them with lots of exercises like listening drills, fill-in-the-blanks, sentence-building, and short readings. The official book page gives the overview on Tuttle’s site.

Audio is a real strength here because you can check your pronunciation and tone listening as you go. Tuttle also provides companion downloads, including audio tracks and an “Online Flash Cards” file, on their download page. The main limitation is that it is not a conversation-first resource. If your goal is everyday speaking and natural phrases, you will likely want to pair it with a separate speaking course or tutor.
