Thư trạm
Thư trạm’s Guide to Vietnamese Grammar is a free online grammar guide organized like a short course. It’s aimed at self-learners who want clear explanations of how Vietnamese sentences work, especially early on when you keep asking “why is it phrased like that?”
The guide is split into many short lessons, starting with absolute basics like topic-comment structure, “là”, bare nouns, and the fact that Vietnamese verbs don’t conjugate. Later sections move into questions, particles (à, hả, nhé, ạ), time words and aspect markers (đã, đang, sẽ, rồi), comparisons, clause linking, and practical topics like counting and classifiers.
What it does well is give you a roadmap of common patterns so you can recognize them while reading real Vietnamese. What it does not do is teach vocabulary or provide drills and exercises, so you’ll need to pair it with your own vocab study and lots of input. If you learn best through practice questions and feedback, this won’t replace a workbook or a teacher. Start here: the guide website.
