Vietnamese: An Essential Grammar (Routledge)

This is a Vietnamese grammar reference book by Binh Ngo (Routledge Essential Grammars). It’s best if you already know some basics and want a clearer picture of how modern Vietnamese is put together.

Instead of a lesson-by-lesson course, you get short sections explaining key structures (nouns and noun phrases, verbs, adjectives, word formation, sentence patterns, and “problem” words and constructions). It’s written for English speakers and regularly points out where direct translation from English leads you wrong.

There’s also a pronunciation section that focuses on syllable structure and common learner errors, with accompanying audio available via Routledge. What it won’t give you is lots of guided practice, dialogues, or speaking feedback, so you’ll likely want to pair it with a course or tutor for active production.
